Life

The Assembly of the Holy Archangels Michael and Gabriel, and of all the bodiless Heavenly Powers, is celebrated on November 8 by the Julian calendar (November 21 by the Gregorian). This feast is dedicated not to a single saint but to the entire angelic world — to all that the Orthodox Church calls the “Heavenly Host” or the “Bodiless Powers.”

Archangel Michael, whose name means “Who is like God,” is the leader of the Heavenly Army. According to biblical and ecclesiastical tradition, he led the good angels in battle against the fallen angels commanded by Lucifer and drove them out of heaven. Michael is depicted as a warrior in armor, with a sword or lance in hand and a flaming countenance turned toward God. He is also the angel who appears at the critical moments of salvation history: he appears to Joshua before the conquest of Jericho, stands by the tomb of Moses, and in the Book of Revelation leads the heavenly forces in the final battle against evil. In the Orthodox Church Michael is especially venerated as the protector and leader who intervenes in severe trials, sickness, and war.

Archangel Gabriel, whose name means “God is my strength,” is above all God’s messenger. He announces prophecies — to Daniel in the Old Testament, to the priest Zechariah about the birth of John the Baptist, and, most sublimely of all, to the Virgin Mary in the Annunciation: “Rejoice, O highly favored one, the Lord is with thee.” Gabriel is the archangel of mercy and revelation; he is present at Christ’s Resurrection and Ascension as well. His role in salvation history makes him one of the most dearly venerated of the heavenly beings.

The word “Assembly” (Greek: Synaxis) denotes a liturgical celebration that gathers together — on this day the Church glorifies simultaneously all the angelic orders: archangels, angels, cherubim, seraphim, thrones, dominions, powers, authorities, and principalities. Church tradition counts nine angelic orders, all of which form the heavenly hierarchy whose sole mission is to glorify God and to serve as mediators between heaven and the world.

The feast was established in the early period of the Church, and was especially developed in the Byzantine Empire, whence it spread throughout the Orthodox world.

Tropar (Tone 4)

O Commanders of the Heavenly Hosts, we who are unworthy beseech you that by your prayers you will encircle us with the shelter of the wings of your immaterial glory, and guard us who fall down before you and fervently cry: deliver us from danger, O Princes of the Powers on High.

Kontakion (Tone 2)

O Commanders of God’s armies, ministers of divine glory, guides of men and leaders of the bodiless, ask for what is profitable for us and great mercy, as Commanders of the Bodiless.

About the Feast

Aranđelovdan, by the number of families who celebrate it, is one of the most widespread patron feasts in Serbia — it is often cited as the second most popular, immediately after Nikoljdan. It is celebrated on November 21 by the New Calendar, in late autumn when the days are short and the nights cold.

November is the month when the earth has already entered its winter rest, harvests are complete, and the household prepares for winter. Aranđelovdan falls precisely in that season of quiet respite, so the feast has a particularly warm, domestic character — the family gathers around the table, and guests are numerous since many families share this patron feast. The feast also comes just before the Nativity Fast (which begins on November 28 by the New Calendar), so the Aranđelovdan table is unrestricted: roast meat, cheese pies, various meat dishes are prepared, while the slava bread and koljivo are the obligatory ritual elements.

It is also notable that the name “Aranđelovdan” in the Serbian people carries the sense of a general protector of home and household — many who celebrate this day say that “the Archangel guards our house.” In some parts of Serbia there is a belief that the archangels guard the gates of villages and towns, and so on this day special prayers are offered for the protection of the home from evil forces and misfortune.
