The Lord's Prayer (Our Father)
The Lord's Prayer — the most important Christian prayer, given personally by Jesus Christ to His disciples.
The Lord’s Prayer
Note: In the Serbian Orthodox Church, the Lord’s Prayer is traditionally chanted in Church Slavonic at the Divine Liturgy and in the prayer rule. The vernacular Serbian version is used in home prayer. The traditional English Orthodox translation is given below, followed by the Church Slavonic text.
English (traditional Orthodox translation):
Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name; Thy kingdom come; Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For Thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, unto the ages of ages. Amen.
Church Slavonic (Serbian recension):
The Lord’s Prayer is found in the Gospel of Matthew (6:9–13) and Luke (11:2–4). Jesus Christ gave it to His disciples when they asked Him to teach them how to pray. It is read every morning, every evening, and before every meal.
